BABY OF MACON (1993) Directed by Peter Greenaway. A beautiful baby is born to a plagued village, which perceives it as a miracle and then begins to flourish. The child is then exploited by a greedy family, then by the church (which tortures it) and then by the entire village (which divides the child's blessings by dismembering his body). Even if you've read the screenplay and know ALL of the scenes containing difficult subject matter, NOTHING can prepare you for the beauty Greenaway extracts from those scenes and the ultimately disturbing sensation the combination creates when you actually see it manifest on the screen. Loaded with unforgettable images and ideas, this is the most purely artistic statement Greenaway has ever made- strikingly visual without his trademark visual hypertext, played out upon stages within stages of actors and spectators in eccentric period attire. Who else would open a film with a semi-intelligible monologue by Famine?

And the spiral downward just continues from there, as he encounters vagrants and a domestic dispute that drive him completely out of his drug-clouded mind! Worse yet, there is the uncaring cameraman, who dispassionately and cruelly lenses the events as they unfold without lending a helping hand to any of the unfortunate victims as they are terrorized by this maniac cop! In fact, he seems to get off on all this as much as the cop.

HWY: AN AMERICAN PASTORAL (196?) Jim Morrison can describe his film better than I can: "It's more  poetic, more of an exercise for me, kind of a warm-up. Essentially there's no plot, no story in the traditional sense...A person, played by me, comes down out of the mountains and hitchhikes his way through the desert. We don't see it, but we later assume that he stole a car and he drives into the city and it just ends there. He checks into a hotel and goes out to a nightclub or something. It just kind of ends like that...and when the musics over, turn off the lights...it is a very beautiful film.

The aliens concoct a plan to kidnap the group and take them up to space to record some of their catchy pop tunes. An alien record deal?? Couldn't be worse than today's music industry. Don't be frightened- this film is not that bad. Of course, it's more novelty than anything else. The reasons to watch are: the utterly bizarre but strangely catchy early synth-pop tunes, the lovely Olivia, and swinging 60s London. The aliens are pretty funny, too. If you're looking for golden cinema, then you may as well pass on this one. Strangely unavailable on video, this is quite rare. This is a 2.35:1 Widescreen transfer and not so bad considering.
